How To Fix Loose Aluminum Siding

Option #1: Refastening Loose Aluminum Siding

First, try tightening the fasteners along the bottom edge of each panel using a hammer. Sometimes, the nails will become loose over time allowing the siding to slide back and forth. Consequently, this can cause panels to pop loose from the wall.

Use a mallet to nail down the nails in the lip of the aluminum siding. Make sure the nails are as tight as they can go. If the siding is nailed down but there is still a bend or looseness, you will need to repair the piece by removing and reattaching the panel.

Option #2: Removing & Reattaching Loose Panels

If tightening the fasteners does not work, then removing and reattaching each panel might be necessary. This process is time-consuming but effective, especially if you cannot reach all of the fasteners due to obstructions. 1. Buy a siding unlock tool

A siding unlock tool, also known as a siding removal tool, will help you remove a loose piece of siding from your wall. It is one of the tools that you absolutely need for this project, so make sure to pick one up from your local home improvement store. If you choose to use a screwdriver or other tools instead, you have a higher chance of scratching the paint and damaging your aluminum siding pieces.

2. Find the loose panel

Chances are, you have already identified the loose piece of siding before you started this project. Go back to this loose piece with your siding unlock tool in hand. Once you have found the loose siding, move on to step 3.

3. Remove the loose siding panel

Hook the end of the siding unlock tool under the edge of the loose piece of siding. Pull the tool down to pull the loose siding out and away from the top piece. The siding should come away relatively easily.

4. Reconnect the siding

If the siding is only loose, you can lock it back into place by pushing it up firmly. It should reconnect with the upper piece. Next, slide the bottom lip back into place and push it firmly to lock it in. You could also add a bit of caulking to the grove to help the siding stick together. Wipe away the caulking from the edges to ensure it doesn’t show.

Note: Aluminium siding is known for its sharp edges. It’s a good idea to wear thick, durable gloves while handling aluminum siding.

5. Refasten the siding with nails

The siding hem or nailing flange will have nails to help the piece stay attached to the exterior of your home. While these nails can hold up very well, they may need to be repaired. Use the siding removal tool to pull out the old nails from the nail hem. Then, use a mallet to nail in new metal nails. After, you can snap the bottom lip of the siding back over the hem.
